This Greek Orange Cake, also known as Portokalopita, is a delightful treat that combines the sweetness of oranges with a tender, flaky texture. It’s perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a sunny afternoon tea or a festive celebration.

What makes Portokalopita truly special is its unique method of using phyllo dough, which creates a light and airy cake. The addition of orange syrup makes it irresistibly moist and adds a citrusy zing that lingers on your palate. It’s a dessert that reflects the essence of Greece in every bite.

The Perfect Citrus Dessert

This Greek Orange Cake is not only visually stunning but also offers a harmonious blend of sweet and tangy flavors. The cake is light, fluffy, and soaked in a fragrant orange syrup that enhances its natural taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough (about 400g)
  • 3 large oranges (zest and juice)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup crushed walnuts or almonds (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Phyllo: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Unroll the phyllo dough and cut it into smaller pieces. Crumple the dough into small balls and place it in the prepared dish.
  2. Mix the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the yogurt, sugar, eggs, vegetable oil, orange zest, and orange juice until smooth. Add the baking powder and vanilla extract, then mix well.
  3. Combine: Pour the batter over the crumpled phyllo dough and gently fold to combine. If using, add the crushed walnuts or almonds. Spread evenly in the baking dish.
  4. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Prepare the Syrup: While the cake is baking, combine 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of orange juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Finish the Cake: Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the warm orange syrup over the hot cake. Allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  7. Serve: Dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving. Enjoy it chilled or at room temperature.
